Sharing Articles I Used To Write For A Local Paper!

// October 25th, 2010 // Big JimmyK's Blog

Back in 2004-2006 I wrote a column for a local newspaper based on humor called “The Roundman Review”. I though it would be fun not only for me to see what I had written and what my take on the world was back then and also to share with you some of the articles that best portray  my personality. Hopefully you will enjoy. We will start with and article I wrote for Thanksgiving, mainly because it’s almost Thanksgiving and this is one of my favorite articles. Here it is!

ROUNDMAN BON APETITE

I have noticed lately that in conversation with friends one major point of interest is the Food Channel and various programs like Emeril Live, 30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray and so on. I do believe part of the attraction is to try and find positive and up beat entertainment however you must admit there is an underlying attraction to this channel that most of us can’t quite put our finger on.

I’ll be the first to tell you I never thought I would be at coffee with friends and happen to slip out with (hey did you guys see that  for recipe awesome couscous vegan dish with garbanzo beans on Bobby Flays show the other night?) I just can’t help myself, what’s even more surprising is when the response is (why yes I did). Emeril has become a household hero for a lot of us and let’s not forget the BAM! I mean how could you pass up a macho program like Iron Chef, these people are bad ass cooks,  just say it with a deep voice with some authority “Iron Chef” that rings the same tone as the WWF.

Well in light of all this Food Channel rhetoric I couldn’t help but feel the need to share an old recipe that was passed on to me. This very ingenuous recipe has always amazed me is Popcorn Dressing. This recipe has a two fold purpose not only does it serve as a great alternative turkey dressing,  it will make you throw away that cooking thermometer or that little plastic pop up thing that has always made me wonder why you want to cook plastic into your turkey.

Here it is.

  • 1 (1 pound) loaf sliced white bread
  • 3/4 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 stalks celery, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup uncooked popcorn

Now stuff your turkey, put it in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 4 hours depending on weight. This is the cool part, when the popcorn blows the ass out of the turkey it’s done and you’re ready to eat.
